If you have small children, or even if you don’t, then you’re probably aware of BPA, or bisphenol A, the substance used to manufacture polycarbonate plastic for shatter resistant food containers and keeps the container from reacting with the food inside it. There has been growing concern that BPA, which has been linked to ailments such as liver disease and heart disease when found in high concentrations in the diet, is deleterious to human health. The FDA just came out with a report that said that there was not enough evidence to ban BPA from food containers now but would continue to study the matter. What I would say is that if you try to avoid eating packaged and processed food and wash your hands before you eat you can minimize your exposure. Many children’s products no longer contain BPA and some states have already banned its use. It’s important to wash your hands because BPA is found on the paper used for receipts, too.
